Michael Cummings on UX design

Cummings writes: “UX design is the art and science of integrating all of the various elements that comprise an interactive system, so that: (1) The user’s needs, limitations, goals, desires, and expectations are served; (2) The publishing organization’s objectives are served as a result of serving the user’s (#1); and (3) The whole is greater than the sum of the parts”.

We could perhaps leave off #3, since in all forms of design the whole should be greater than the sum of the parts. But it is an otherwise helpful article for an overview of UX design. I like that Cummings’ builds on Jesse James Garrett’s famous Elements of User Experience diagram, which I’ve also found to be an essential point of reference for UX practice:

New York State native recently moved to California after 10 years living and working in New York City. I bring a decade of diverse experience in digital media product development, including leadership and creative problem solving in: product concepts, market analysis, and hypothesis generation; envisioning, design, and prototyping; Agile development methods, Agile product ownership, road-mapping and management; wireframing information architecture and interaction flows; user experience research and testing; hands-on design and coding for web and mobile; as well as near-term and long-term strategic thinking. In addition I bring design chops and techie cred with OmniGraffle, Visio, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign (Adobe Creative Suite), Web standard HTML, XHTML, DOM, CSS, JavaScript, XML, AJAX, and RSS. I am versed in Google Analytics, Omniture / SiteCatalyst, and Flurry for mobile usage analysis. Plus, I’ve dirtied my hands getting under the hood with dev tools for mobile app programming and debugging on Apple iOS, Windows Phone, and Google Android.
